Adult Swim has announced it has partnered with Alcon Television Group and Crunchyroll to produce a new anime series set in the Blade Runner universe. Blade Runner — Black Lotus will span 13 episodes and be directed by Shinji Aramaki and Kenji Kamiyama. Shinichiro Watanabe of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo fame has been tapped as creative producer. A press release states that the new series “will take place in 2032 and will include some familiar characters from the Blade Runner universe.”
“I first saw Blade Runner in 1982, at age 11. It has remained one of the defining films of my life,” Adult Swim SVP/Creative Director Jason DeMarco said in the press release. “ To be able to explore more of this universe, with the incredible talent we have on board, is a dream come true.”
Blade Runner 2049, the long-awaited sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1982 seminal Blade Runner, was released last year. A short animated film titled Blade Runner Black Out 2022, directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, was released last year. It featured a score by Flying Lotus.
