Sony has stopped producing 8mm video hardware. The company expects that it will make final shipments of its two remaining products, the GV-D200 Portable Video Recorder, and the GV-D800 Video Walkman player in September. The company stopped selling video camcorders in 2008.

Sony began selling 8mm video recording equipment in 1985. It continued to sell camcorders using the popular format until 2008. Ultimately, however the format was replaced by both amateurs and professionals with digital tapes and then flash drives. Sony sold over 57 million 8mm camcorders from 1985 to 2008.

The company will continue to sell 8mm tapes for an unspecified time.
