IDW Publishing has added Angry Birds to their already impressive stable of licensed properties. The publisher will launch a new series of Angry Birds comics this June.
Since the debut of the original game, Angry Birds has become a sensation with over 2 billion app downloads and nine different iterations in the franchise so far, not to mention a line of toys, an upcoming animated series, and an in-development feature film from Sony Pictures. Angry birds has come to be the most iconic fixture of the casual and mobile video game market.
“We’re very happy to be in business with Rovio on Angry Birds comics,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief. “Rovio has taken what was once a captivating game and built it into an interesting world filled with interesting and, uh, feathered characters who will make a perfect addition to our growing line of fun, all-ages comics.”
The Angry Birds world stars the inhabitants of the Piggie Islands – including Red, Chuck, Bomb, Stella, Matilda, and King Pig – embarking on endless fun adventures. Top creators such as Jeff Parker (Thunderbolts) and Paul Tobin (Bandette) are already signed on to lend their talents to the franchise.
“The Angry Birds comics are a perfect way of getting to know the characters, their personalities, and their world more closely. I hope that readers of all ages will have fun with these comics by top-notch creators,” said Jukka Heiskanen, Rovio’s Editor-In-Chief of Comics.
