Apple has made some slight changes to the Smart Cover lineup for the iPad 2, a check of the company’s online store indicates. Gone is the orange polyurethane option; in its place, a new dark gray model has been added. The leather cases, meanwhile, are now described as having a “soft, color-matched” microfiber lining instead of just a soft one.
The Smart Cover has so far been a popular accessory for Apple, although sales have likely slowed down since third-party cases became widespread. The product’s main significance has been as a template, demonstrating how to take advantage of the iPad 2’s built-in magnets, as well as create covers that can double as stands. Today’s lineup changes are probably meant to make to optimize polyurethane Smart Cover sales, and make the leather models more attractive, given a $69 pricetag.
