Animation for Disney•Pixar’s Coco began back on April 12, 2016, according to a tweet from the director, Toy Story 3‘s Lee Unkrich (Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo).
Unkrich spoke about the film and its inspiration, Dia De Los Muertos, back at the D23 Expo in 2015, saying:
“I’d seen it portrayed in folk art. It was something about the juxtaposition of skeletons with bright, festive colors that captured my imagination. It has led me down a winding path of discovery. And the more I learn about Dia De Los Muertos, the more it affects me deeply.”
Unkrich will direct the film with co-director Adrian Molina (The Good Dinosaur), who also wrote the script. Disney•Pixar’s Coco will be released on November 22, 2017.
The next film from the company is Cars 3, which will race into theaters on June 16, 2017.
