With their adaptation of Garth Ennis’s Preacher slated for its AMC premiere on Sunday, May 22, writer/producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg already have another beloved Ennis comic book series headed to the small screen as Deadline reports that The Boys TV series is coming to Cinemax. Rogen and Goldberg will be joined on this new show by Original Film’s Neil Moritz (Fast & Furious, The Green Hornet) and Sony TV. Supernatural creator Eric Kripke will pen the series originally written by Ennis and drawn by Darick Robertson.
The Boys revolves around the government’s decision to have the CIA monitor all superheroes using a Black Ops team called “The Boys” and what happens when a Scottish conspiracy nut named Wee Hughie, whose girlfriend was killed by a superhero, is inducted to join the group when they’re reformed to take down rogue superheroes who have gotten out of control.
Rogen and Goldberg, who previously helmed the well-recieved Preacher pilot as well as This Is The End and The Interview, will direct the series, with Ennis and Robertson serving as co-executive producers.
Back in 2010, Adam McKay (The Big Short, Anchorman) had intended to direct Columbia Pictures’ adaptation of The Boys as a feature film with Simon Pegg as “Wee” Hughie Campbell, Pegg having been the obvious visual inspiration for Hughie in the first place. A series of writers, including Goldberg and Rogen, attempted to crack the script but the studio ultimately passed on making it as a film.
