DOT Changes Rules To Allow E-Bikes In National Parks

E-bikes, which were recently allowed in state parks, can now be used in national parks as well. The Department of the Interior announced its plan to implement an order allowing the use of low-speed electric bicycles at national wildlife refuges and other DOI-managed public lands where regular biking already occurs.

“Millions of Americans want to bike on our public lands and pedal assist bikes can facilitate the effort of those whose age, fitness level, or disability limits their interest,” Interior Secretary David Bernhardt said.

The thought behind the regulations is to treat e-bikes similarly to normal bikes.

“E-bikes can help make our parks, refuges, and public lands accessible to them, providing opportunities to explore areas of the great outdoors that were previously unreachable,” Bernhardt added.

The order directs DOI Bureaus to create policy for e-bike use in their lands. They plan to make guidelines consistent with those already in place by state departments.
