According to The Hollywood Reporter, New Line Cinema has grabbed up the film rights to the big-screen take on the hugely-popular mobile game Fruit Ninja, which Australia’s Halfbrick Studios is looking to adapt as a live-action family comedy.
Tripp Vinson (San Andreas, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters) will produce the feature film through his Vinson Films production banner, with screenwriters JP Lavin and Chad Damiani (the in-development How to Survive a Garden Gnome Attack) attempting to turn the rather simple interface of slicing fruit and avoiding bombs into a viable dramatic story with elements like characters, backstory, a through line and human emotion. Sam White and Tara Farney will executive produce.
This will mark a return to New Line for Vinson, who produced the Journey to the Center of the Earth films and San Andreas for the studio. The story is said to involve a team of misfits recruited to become Fruit Ninjas so they can — naturally — save the world.
Fruit Ninja is currently the second top-selling iOS game of all time, with over 1 billion downloads!
