Garmin is releasing an updated version of its ruggedized Fenix GPS watch, with a number of smart watch-style improvements. The Fenix 2 offers a similar set of features meant for outdoor enthusiasts as the original, except it adds more to its recording capabilities, and is now capable of displaying call and message notifications from a connected smartphone over Bluetooth.
The wrist-based device is able to track progress in six sports, reports Engadget, with the device able to record data from specific activities automatically, such as monitoring lap times. Similar to the Forerunner 620, it can estimate a user’s VO2 max, recovery times, and perform recovery checks after a workout. A Virtual Partner feature provides a competitor for the wearer for journeys, with the built-in accelerometer able to help it keep track of distances and pace indoors.
Garmin Fenix 2
Just as in the Fenix, the Fenix 2 includes a GPS receiver, an altimeter, barometer, and 3-axis compass for navigation, keeps a record of up to 10,000 track points and 1,000 waypoints, and can allow users to reverse their journey to a starting point. Data can be shared wirelessly to other Garmin devices or smartphones.
Offering a battery life of up to 50 hours in GPS mode or five weeks as a watch, on-screen notifications when paired with an iPhone 4S or later, and access to the Garmin Connect mobile app, the Fenix 2 is shipping in March for $400, or $450 with a heart rate monitor.
