GMA SafariABC’s “Good Morning America” is tapping into virtual-reality technology for “GMA on Safari,” an immersive VR experience that it will air live from Africa. The morning talk show will broadcast live on ABC from 7-9 a.m. Eastern on Tuesday, with “GMA” news anchor Amy Robach reporting from Tanzania, Africa, about the encroaching threat of poachers on the region’s endangered animals.

The VR webcast, filmed in Tanzania’s Crater Highlands, will take viewers off-road for a you-are-there perspective of the landscapes and wildlife. Coverage will include video shot by drones in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and neighboring Serengeti National Park, populated by big-game fauna including zebras, lions, leopards, buffalo, rhinos and elephants.

Other TV nets have jumped into VR as well. On Sunday, Fox Sports delivered live VR content for NASCAR’s Daytona 500, under a five-year pact with NextVR. ABC News, which produces “GMA,” has previously delved into VR production.

“GMA” is working with IM360, a VR production company, which is providing 360-degree cameras, virtual-reality production software and a back-end distribution platform. To access “GMA on Safari” in VR, viewers can visit ABCNews.com/VR on the Web, or download the IM360 app for Apple iOS or Android devices.

In addition, the VR stream can be access using Google Cardboard with a compatible smartphone by switching to Cardboard mode on the IM360 app, and via a Samsung Gear VR headset using the IM360 app from the Oculus store.
