Google this afternoon said it has purchased Picnik, a web-based image editing site. Neither company has unveiled the terms of the deal or their immediate plans, though Google has said the deal will help it “improve the online photo editing experience.”
Picnik Founder and CEO, Jonathan Sposato is a serial entrepreneur. Prior to Picnik, Jonathan was the founder and CEO of Phatbits, which he sold to Google in 2005.
The deal should cause some major upgrades for Picasa, as Google takes on Adobe’s Photoshop.com and Yahoo’s Flickr. Picnik is expected to remain as-is for the near future
This deal could be a cornerstone of Google’s long-term plans for Chrome OS, giving it a strong photo editing tool from the start.
