H2O Wireless, once known as O2 Wireless, has taken live what it claims is the first prepaid 4G unlimited Internet access with its Bolt 4G Unlimited plan. The $50 rate both sheds contracts and ‘secret’ fees such as activation. The company is hoping to match Clear’s rates for WiMAX with as much simplicity as possible.
Users can choose from the Bolt Flash USB dongle for plugging into their notebooks or the Bolt Spider mobile hotspot device. The hotspot will let up to eight Wi-Fi devices share a broadband connection.
H2O Bolt falls back on EDGE or HSPA when WiMAX isn’t available, unlike Clear’s largely 4G-only strategy or Sprint’s EVDO. The Bolt Flash is priced at $100 while the Bolt Spider hotspot is priced at $150. The hotspot promises six hours of battery life, a 150-foot range, and offers up to WPA2 security.
