Nintendo may be working on a new console, but it hasn’t given up on the Wii U and 3DS. During a recent investors’ call, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said that it would be “inefficient” to cut off software for existing consoles with an established user base.
“The NX is new hardware, and will start from zero,” Iwata was quoted as saying. “However, the 3DS and Wii U have install bases. Immediately cutting off software for previous hardware upon the release of a new machine is inefficient. We will continue making 3DS and Wii U software while preparing for the NX.”
Iwata singled out the Wii U, in particular, explaining that the company was “prioritising satisfying customers” who purchased the console. Nintendo will officially unveil new console hardware next year when it lifts the lid on the NX, the successor to the Wii U.
The company recently suggested that it was looking at introducing an early access scheme, similar to Steam.
