Paramount Pictures will soon let 10 Cloverfield Lane out of J.J. Abrams’ coveted mystery box, but even before Clovie digs his claws into moviegoers again, fans are already wondering about a Cloverfield 3. Entertainment Weekly has asked the movie mogul if this new film — rumored to have added the Cloverfield elements late in the production process — will lead to a threequel.

“I think that would be presumptuous, because we’re talking about this movie and comparing it to ‘Cloverfield,’ but I would be lying if I didn’t say there was something else that, if we’re lucky enough to do it, could be really cool that connects some stories,” said Abrams. He added that there’s a “larger conceit” at play, and that, “This is just this movie, and it’s only two films that we’re talking about right now. There is something else that we’d like to do, and hopefully we’ll get a shot.”

About 10 Cloverfield Lane, producer J.J. Abrams previously confirmed it’s not a direct sequel to the 2008 Matt Reeves film and said: “The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of ‘Cloverfield.’ The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.”

Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, the March 11, 2016 release stars John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Gallagher Jr. The script was written by Josh Campbell and Matthew Stuecken.
