This year’s Doctor Who Christmas special was an incredibly anticipated event for fans, and not just because Nick Frost was guest starring as Santa Claus. Whovians were also waiting to see what would happen with the Doctor’s current companion, Clara, and the actress who portrays her, Jenna Coleman, who has had much speculation surrounding her and her status on the series with many saying that she would be leaving the show after the Christmas special. However, at the end of last night’s Doctor Who, Coleman put any and all rumors to rest by confirming that she would be remaining on the series for its upcoming ninth season.
“It’s wonderful,” Coleman said at the end of Doctor Who: Last Christmas, setting the record straight. “I get a whole other series of stories with the Doctor and I couldn’t walk away with the story being unresolved.”
“There is so much more to do,” she continued. “I think they’ve finally just reached a point where they really understand each other. The arrival of the 12th Doctor has just kind of dropped this whole bombshell and allowed the dynamic to totally change, so I think just when Clara was feeling more comfortable in the relationship, it has suddenly thrown something new up.”
“I’m thrilled. Jenna has just been fantastic and such a pleasure to work with,” Peter Capaldi, who plays the current Doctor, said about Coleman’s decision to continue with the series.
Coleman first appeared on Doctor Who in September 2012, as a character known as “Oswin” in the Season 7 premiere, “Asylum of the Daleks.” She then joined the show officially as Clara Oswald in that year’s Christmas special.
