Amazon has given a preview of Kindle for Android. The new version stands out for its inclusion of a Kindle store browser within the app itself; unlike the iPhone or iPad versions, it doesn’t require a web browser.
The Android edition still supports Whispersync for syncing books and bookmarks between the Kindle hardware and other devices. At present, however, it doesn’t support newspapers or other subscription material, putting it at a disadvantage in that area compared to versions for the iPad and similar devices.
Amazon plans to post the Kindle app to Android Market sometime this summer and is taking notification sign-ups today. The app will require at least Android 1.6 as well as a microSD card slot to store the books.
