Amazon this morning announce that the third-generation Kindle will now be sold in AT&T’s retail shops. The Kindle is the carrier’s first dedicated e-reader of any kind and already uses AT&T’s network and roaming for Kindle book downloads. AT&T is offering the Kindle at its unsubsidized $189 price and will have it in its stores on March 6.
E-readers have rarely had any presence at carriers. The AT&T deal not only gives Amazon a large boost in retail presence but marks the first time the Kindle and the iPad will be available through the same store outside of a general electronics shop such as Best Buy. Both have had wide distribution in retail but have usually been relatively separate.
