LG may be preparing to exit the plasma television market, a report claims. The manufacturer is said to be experiencing a reduced demand for its plasma display panel (PDP) televisions, with LG expected to announce its suspension of production in the near future as it moves its focus onto other display technologies, such as OLED panels. “We are internally conducting a study on when we should suspend he PDP business,” said LG home entertainment division head Ha Hyun-hwoi to the Yonhap News Agency. “We will make an official announcement on the issue in the future.” DisplaySearch currently estimates that PDP shipments will reduce to 5 million by next year, less than half the 10.3 million shipments in 2013. The move away from plasma to OLED and LCD panels has already been announced or completed by other major panel manufacturers. Panasonic has already shut down multiple factories manufacturing plasma displays, while Samsung revealed last month that it would cease its PDP efforts at the end of November. According to the report, this would leave the China-based Changhong Electric Co. as the last major PDP producer.
