Marvel to End Current Ongoing Guardians of the Galaxy Series

Marvel Comics has revealed that their ongoing Guardians of the Galaxy series is ending as of January’s issue #150.

Rumblings of a cancellation first surfaced when Marvel’s February 2018 solicitations hit online without Guardians of the Galaxy #151 in the lineup. Writer Gerry Duggan confirmed that cancellation on Twitter:

As Duggan hints, it appears that the series is ending in order to make way for new cosmic-focused projects. Duggan and artist Aaron Kuder are attached to a new one-shot special called Infinity Countdown: Adam Warlock #1 in February, which builds on the character’s return in Guardians #150. As Marvel teased last month, the Infinity Countdown storyline will also mark the next major appearance of Wolverine, who recently returned to life in the pages of Marvel Legacy #1.

Duggan’s Guardians of the Galaxy run began this past spring, when he took the reins of the series from outgoing writer Brian Michael Bendis. Duggan initially wrote the twice-monthly All-New Guardians of the Galaxy, which featured a streamlined, MCU-friendly roster. The series abandoned the twice-monthly format and reverted to its classic numbering as part of the Marvel Legacy relaunch this fall, but it doesn’t appear as though that numbering scheme will last beyond issue #150.

Whatever the future holds for the Guardians in 2018, it’s definitely looking as though Marvel has a major cosmic-oriented crossover in the works to coincide with the release of Avengers: Infinity War.
