Days of Wonder have now released the long-awaited digital version of the award-winning historical board game Memoir ’44, called Memoir ’44 Online. Available for Mac, Windows and Linux, the game centers on the most famous battles of World War II. The digital version retains the main elements of the board game, including card-centric command and tactics along with dice rolls and even little plastic soliders and tanks
The turn-based game’s skirmishes last about 20 to 40 minutes each, allowing for quick gameplay, re-creating the features of the battlefield, troop positions, and mission objectives of hundreds of different battle scenarios. The digital version features a built-in computer player called Johnny who helps train players or act as an automatic opponent. The game also includes online play, allowing challengers to square off on various fronts and earn achievement badges and expert awards.
The original game was a surprise hit, selling over 100,000 copies at retail. The digital version is free to begin playing, covering hours of free play on famous battlefields on the western, eastern, Pacific and Mediterranean fronts. Further play is offered based on Gold Ingots, the in-game currency, which can be obtained through pay-to-play plans.
The game is available to download at no charge, and comes with a quantity of free Gold Ingots to get started. System requirements for the game are not yet available, but the game requires a free Days of Wonder account before allowing the download.
