Millions were hit by a Gmail outage on Thursday and today, with the U.S. and UK the main countries affected. Users reported getting a ‘service not available’ message. Google said that the outage was limited to those using Google for Work, with Google Chat also hit.
Google first acknowledged the issue at 8.16am PT yesterday, with service restored for ‘some’ users around 90 minutes later. The company then issued a series of updates to its status page, indicating that service was gradually being restored to increasing numbers of users …
Finally, just after 1am on Friday, Google marked the problem as resolved, though it did note that a small minority of customers were still affected.

The company said at one point that it had identified the cause of the failure, but has not shared any details.
