A new amiibo-based game has been announced for release in Japan: Mini Mario & Friends Amiibo Challenge. Launching January 28th, those with amiibo can download the game for free on both consoles (and an eShop download should be available in the future as well.) It has the gameplay of the Mario vs Donkey Kong series. You can check out an announcement trailer below.
By touching an amiibo to the Gamepad, characters from the toys will appear. You use the touchscreen to lead them to the goal. You can use any amiibo, though if you use anyone not from the Mario and Donkey Kong series, like Kid Icarus, Wii Fit Trainer, or Link, the toy character will default into a generic robot named “Mini Spec”.
Using an amiibo from Mario and Donkey Kong series will generate a unique toy character, who will automatically move forward in courses riddled with traps like pitfalls and enemies. You can draw bridges, add/remove pipes and blocks, etc. to help toys reach the goal. Some amiibo have special abilities, and there are special stages that can only be accessed with these abilities. There will be over 60 stages.
