When Tessa Thompson was cast as Valkyrie in the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok, it came with a note that her character would be the new love interest for the title character and that Natalie Portman wouldn’t be returning. Speaking with The Wall Street Journal, Portman confirmed that Thor: Ragnarok is no fluke and she’s finished playing Jane Foster.
“As far as I know, I’m done. I don’t know if maybe one day they’ll ask for an ‘Avengers 7’ or whatever, I have no idea. But as far as I know, I’m done.”
Portman appeared in the first two Thor films, with references made to her character in both of The Avengers movies as well. It’s worth noting, however, that just because Portman is finished with the franchise doesn’t mean Marvel won’t eventually recast the character for another appearance which they’ve done multiple times already with War Machine (replacing Terrance Howard with Don Cheadle) and The Hulk (replacing Edward Norton with Mark Ruffalo).
Thor: Ragnarok stars Chris Hemsworth as the god of thunder once again, along with Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo, Idris Elba, Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, and Sir Anthony Hopkins. Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Ragnarok will smash its way into theaters on November 3, 2017.
