Intel is readying a new revision of the Haswell-series of Intel Core processors. The newest models are built on the latest 22nm tri-gate SoC process technology. As one result of the fabrication technology, the graphics core incorporates several new features that allow it to improve energy efficiency by 40 percent — essentially giving longer battery life for the same performance or improving performance.
Revealed at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference, the new core can allegedly very quickly (within 0.32µsec) go into standby mode and exit even faster, yielding a power consumption of 10 percent of active use with no drain or lag seen by the user, potentially extending the battery yet further. To accomodate this, and voltage switching inside the GPU.
Enthusiast site Anandtech believes that at present, there are five chips in the pipeline, three dual core, and a pair of quad-core models, with die sizes ranging from 130 square mm to 260 square mm, and 77 square mm for embedded DRAM.
