New iPhone owners are finding themselves unable to activate their devices today, according to widespread accounts. Trying to go through the process in iOS generates an error message stating that activation servers are unavailable, while suggesting that people try again later or activate through iTunes instead. Customer calls to Apple appear to confirm that servers are down, so does AT&T.
Problems are said to have begun roughly three or four hours ago, and so far there is no indication of when the servers will be back up. The outage represents Apple’s second major incident in the space of week; currently the Developer Center is still mostly out of commission while Apple tries to fix security vulnerabilities.
