The newly introduced, ad-supported Kindles can get their ads removed, though Amazon will charge users $30 to do it, per a user on the MobileRead forums. The company allows owners of the Special Offers Kindle to log into their Manage Your Kindle page and unsubscribe from the ads. This costs the difference in the retail prices of the subsidized and unsubsidized devices, which is $30.
This option eliminates the need for owners to return or exchange the Kindle if they do not want to see ads. Ads come in the form of a skinny banner ad at the bottom and screensavers when the Kindle is unused long enough to go to sleep mode. They provide discounts on specific books, two-for-one deals, and in some cases local offers.
When Kindle Special Offers first hit, we here at ToT even got mails for owners of Kindles wasking how they could get the ads on their non-ad supported models. The ads we have seen go on the screen, Iwe are not sure Amazon going to get that many takers on the $30 extra no Ads versions.
