mario-kart-8-yoshis-circuitNintendo has released their Q2 Financial Report, showcasing mixed results. Sales of Mario Kart 8, Splatoon, Super Mario Marker, Amiibo, and Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer were the true stars of the financial report. Wii U sales, however, stalled big time.

Wii U only sold 720,000 units during Q2, bringing lifetime sales to only 10.7 million units worldwide. Nintendo’s 3DS family of handhelds fared a bit better, selling 1.27 million units during the second quarter. Things brings the 3DS worldwide sales total to 54.34 million units. In terms of lifetime software sales, Wii U and 3DS have sold 69 million and 244.9 million units respectively.

Mario Kart 8 continues to be a huge hit for Wii U owners. The game sold 5.87 million units so far, which means that over 50% of Wii U owners own a copy of Mario Kart 8. Splatoon, the first new IP from Nintendo in over a decade, continues to sell well. Lifetime sales for the third-person shooter sit at 2.42 million units. Super Mario Maker, which launched in September, has sold an impressive 1.88 million units. 3DS exclusive Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer is another hit for Nintendo, hitting 2.02 million units sold worldwide.

Amiibo, Nintendo’s toy-to-life figurines, continue to sell well. Since they launched a year ago, 21 million Amiibos have been sold worldwide. Net sales for the figurines stand at $1.7 billion, with 71% of those sales coming from outside of Japan. Nintendo has clearly hit a goldmine with Amiibo.
