In Nintendo’s latest financial forecast, the company reported that it failed to reach its predicted number of 3DS sales during the 2015 fiscal year. Although it fell short with the 3DS, there is a silver lining to the report, which shows higher software sales for its Wii and Wii U home consoles than the company expected.
Nintendo originally expected to sell a total of 7.6 million 3DS handhelds and 56 million 3DS software units between April 2015 and March 2016. Although its sales figures came up short, it still managed to sell 6.6 million 3DS handhelds and 47 million 3DS software products, which shows the 3DS is performing well in the market.
For its home consoles, Nintendo predicted it would sell a total of 100,000 Nintendo Wiis and 3.4 million Wii Us, and it expects to have reached this number of sales by the end of March. Compared to the previous year, Nintendo managed to sell just 3.38 million Wii U consoles, which indicates that the company is slowly improving the position of its flagship console in the market.
Nintendo actually increased its prediction for Wii and Wii U software sales. The company previously expected software sales on the Nintendo Wii to hit 400,000, but now anticipates the sale of some 700,000 software units. The predicted number of Wii U software sales did not increase quite so substantially, but it still raised from an expected 2.3 million to 2.7 million.
Overall, the report shows that Nintendo has had a fairly successful year. Its diminished 3DS sales are problematic, but it still maintains a strong presence in the handheld gaming market, and its home consoles are holding strong. Although the company didn’t see much growth during 2015, we can anticipate the upcoming NX console will further help to improve Nintendo’s position in the market.
