Today NDVIDA released on its web site  technical white paper  that details why the newest smartphones and tablet devices will require the power of graphics processors (GPUs) to handle present and future mobile use cases – Bringing High-End Graphics to Handheld Devices (PDF).  This whitepaper is a great companion white to late last year’s The Benefits of Multiple CPU Cores in Mobile Devices (PDF).

We here at ToT know some of you will not find these whitepapers light reading, while other of you will enjoy them greatly. But the value of this information deos effect all of us by helping improve both the hardware and software we will get to enjoy on our phones, as NVIDIA believes more and more people think of their mobile device as a computer first.

With the higher resolutions and display sizes coming in phones, we want graphics that take advanage of that, even if you don’t think about things like lighting, shadows, anti-aliasing, etc.

People want to have better performance for Flash on their phone, sorry Apple. Even if they don’t really understand what hardware-accelerated Adobe Flash is.  They also desire responsive user interfaces and high-quality game content on the go.  These are the features and needs NVIDIA addresses with their Tegra 2 CPUs.   The Terga 2 is used in the Motorola Droid X2 and LG’s Optimus 2X. Both are very fast and impressive phones which we had time play with during CES this month.
