Patriot Memory is working on a USB thumb drive that attempts to solve the problem of transferring data between devices that possess USB-C ports, such as the MacBook and the Google Chromebook Pixel, and regular USB connections. The Type-C USB Flash Drive is a compact external memory device that will be able to use the smaller USB connection, but will still be able to work with systems using existing USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports.
The company’s solution is a short drive using both a USB 3.0 connector and one for USB-C, placed back to back, with both connectors providing access to the same allocation of flash memory. . A small cover on a central pivot allows the two USB connectors to spin around, exposing whichever connector is going to be used, and protecting the other end.
Patriot is aiming to start shipping the Type-C USB Flash Drives in June, with 32GB and 64GB capacities on offer to consumers. Pricing for the drives has yet to be announced, but it is likely to cost slightly more than the company’s current USB 3.0 equivalents.
