Pixelmator has released an important update of its namesake image editing software, v3.1, also codenamed Marble. The release is mainly geared toward supporting the 2013 Mac Pro, for instance enabling 16-bit-per-channel color, multicore optimizations, and the use of both of the Pro’s graphics cards simultaneously. This should speed up rendering and various other tasks, offering what Pixelmator claims is “profoundly” better performance.
For all users, the app now includes an Order Prints feature; via MILK Print on Demand, people can order items such as postcards, posters, and gallery frames. Layer Styles have gained a number of improvements, such as the ability to change the opacity of multiple layers simultaneously, and a streamlined workflow. Smaller changes include the restoration of a number of effects — such as Pointillize, Pixelize, Tracer, Neon, and ASCII — and expanded RAW format support.
The update is free for existing Pixelmator owners, and can be downloaded via the Mac App Store. For new users, the software costs $30.
