Sony just released its results for the third quarter ending December 31st, 2014, and the PlayStation division did remarkably well. Sony’s Game & Network Division, which mainly comprises of PlayStation (console, games, and services like PS Plus), generated $4.35 billion for the company.
In fact, the PlayStation division did better than any other division at Sony, which shows just how important the PlayStation 4 has become (since the PS4 fueled much of the revenue for the Game & Network division). Some of that income also comes from Sony’s sale of Sony Online Entertainment.
Sony sold 6.4 million PlayStation 4 consoles during that period, for total sales of over 20 million. However, there was one disappointing entry in the PlayStation division: the Vita is still losing money.
Overall, Sony posted an operating income of $235 million. Some of the gains were also due to favorable exchange rates, as the dollar has been rising in value compared to the Yen.
Sony is still taking a big hit on its TV and smartphone business, and recently said that it would shift more of its resources towards PlayStation.
