The San Antonio City Council approved several measures on Thursday as part of an overhaul of dockless vehicles on municipal streets.
One of the immediate changes is a new limit on the volume of electric scooters and bikes from 16,100 to nearly half that amount. In addition, the city will soon launch a request for proposals that could further impact the number of operators and vehicles.
Companies which are currently allowed to operate more than 1,000 dockless vehicles in San Antonio will now be limited to 50 percent of their current permitted inventory. The maximum total of vehicles that will be permitted to the current seven operators will be capped at 8,850.
On June 7, the city will issue the RFP and plans to select three companies that will be permitted to operate up to 5,000 vehicles. That RFP process will close on July 22 and council members are expected to consider contracts in early October.
