Slate  announced today the release of its iPad app, offering iPad users the opportunity to engage with  Slate  content in a way that’s best suited for the medium.  Slate’s iPad app is free to download, thanks to an exclusive launch sponsorship by Marriott Hotels & Resorts, which lasts through October 11.

Developed internally by  Slate Group staffers,  Slate’s iPad app gives  Slate  readers ready access to the features they love:  Slate  articles, videos, podcasts, and  Slate’s news aggregator,  The Slatest. While it’s long been possible to read  Slate  on the go-”at  mobile.slate.com or through  Slate’s iPhone app-”the  Slate  app for iPad offers an improved portable reading experience, one designed to take full advantage of this new medium.

Highlights of  Slate’s iPad App

  • A clean, uncluttered, easy-to-use interface that optimizes the reading experience for iPad.
  • True integration of multimedia, (video and audio), within its content pages including daily videos from  Slate V  and the ability to play  Slate’s popular podcast series in the background while browsing other  Slate  content.
  • The ability to directly share  Slate  content within social media sites via email, Twitter and Facebook.
  • A home screen designed to showcase  Slate’s top stories while also allowing readers to browse  Slate’s Politics, Arts, Life, Business & Tech, and Science sections.

“Since its inception,  Slate  has been an agenda setter in the digital media space,” said Jacob Weisberg,  Slate  Chairman and Editor in Chief. “We know that our audience looks to us for innovation in journalism, and with our iPad app, we truly deliver on those expectations. We’re raising the bar on what users should expect in media apps for iPad by bringing smart content to smart readers, and really delivering it in a way that takes full advantage of the capabilities offered by this new device.”

“Slate and its new iPad app are a perfect fit for the Marriott Hotels customer -“ the achiever who is an early adopter of technology and is highly mobile,” said Michael Dail, senior director of marketing for Marriott Hotels & Resorts. “As a brand, we raise the bar on what hotel guests should expect in a travel experience, much like Slate readers expect more from their favorite news site.”

Slate  worked with Medialets to develop the innovative ad units seen in the iPad application.

Slate’s  iPad  app is now available for  download at the app store for iPad for free.
