Speck is now taking orders for its new SmartShell for Apple’s MacBook Pro with Retina Display. The company seems to have acknowledged a frequent complaint with previous versions of its snap-on hard protective covers, which while effective, are slightly thick and heavy. Speck says that its new SmartShell for the MacBook Pro with Retina Display is 30 percent thinner than previous versions.
The SmartShell comes in two versions and three colors in total. One is clear and offers glossy ultra-thin protection, while the second style is made with a satin, soft-touch finish. It is available in Bubblegum Pink, with the Black version already out of stock and on back-order.
The SmartShell design incorporates anti-tip rubberized feet, while the covers are just 1.5mm thick. Speck also says that the SmartShell is also easier to take on and take off. They are retailing for $50 each through Speck’s online site, with free delivery throughout the US. The cases also ship around the world, with shipping prices varying by region.
