Tesla is planning to make a pickup truck.
On Twitter Tuesday, the electric vehicle maker’s CEO Elon Musk said he’s eager to build one.
“I promise that we will make a pickup truck right after Model Y,” Musk tweeted.
The Model Y is an all-electric crossover which should go into production sometime in 2018.
On the topic of a pickup, Musk wrote:
“had the core design/engineering elements” in mind “for almost five years.”
Musk has asked his followers how Tesla can improve, prompting one user to suggest the company make a pickup. The CEO added that the Tesla pickup will be “similar” in size to the Ford F150.
While the semi market is small, pickups sales are booming. The U.S. pickup truck market grew 6% in 2016 on a unit basis. Fullsize grew 3% and midsize grew 25% per Seeking Alpha.
