While it is to be expected that Tom Hooper’s “” would have a temporary bump in ticket sales due to its 12 Oscar nominations including Best Picture, the public has gone beyond what would be expected.
Fandango, the online ticket retailer, is reporting that “Speech” experienced a 76% increase in ticket sales since the Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday morning. Fandango compared two comparable periods of its ticket sales for “The King’s Speech” — last Tuesday and Wednesday morning (January 18, 6:00 am PT through January 19, 12:00 noon PT ) with yesterday and today’s sales so far (January 25, 6:00 a.m. PT through January 26, 12 noon PT).
“The Academy Award nominations clearly gave the film a little Oscar bump,” says Fandango editor Chuck Walton. “On Tuesday, this little movie moved up to the top slot as Fandango’s top ticket-seller of the day, a nice feat considering that the film opened more than eight weeks ago.”
The Weinstein Co. should be very happy.
