The L Word Sequel Series Chooses a New Show Runner

The L Word sequel series in the works at Showtime has tapped Marja-Lewis Ryan to serve as showrunner and executive producer.

Ryan wrote and directed the upcoming film 6 Balloon starring Abbi Jacobson and Dave Franco and is penning the reboot of Splash starring Channing Tatum and Jillian Bell. She is also writing Buried Bodies for Noah Hawley and Fox Searchlight. She is an award-winning playwright and her adapted play The Four-Faced Liar won multiple awards including Outstanding First Narrative Feature at L.A. Outfest. She also co-starred in and co-produced the film.

“Ilene [Chaiken] and the original ‘L Word’ made me believe that my voice mattered,” Ryan said. “I am beyond excited for the opportunity to usher in the next generation of diverse queer people. I couldn’t imagine a better time to make this show.

It was revealed in July that the premium cable network was working on a new installment of the acclaimed series, which ran on the network for six seasons between 2004 and 2009. The show, which followed the trials and tribulations of a group of lesbian friends living in Los Angeles. The new series will focus on a new group of women, but priginal series stars Jennifer Beals, Kate Moennig and Leisha Hailey will appear in the series.

Original series creator Ilene Chaiken will serve as an executive producer on the series along with Beals, Moennig and Hailey
