The proposed sequel to the 1991 film The Rocketeer is reportedly back on track with Sleight director JD Dillard to chair the movie.

In 2016 Hololywood was buzzing with the idea that Disney was moving forward with The Rocketeers, a sequel to the 1938 Los Angeles-set superhero film based on the comic by Dave Stevens, with Max Winkler and Matt Spicer hired to pen the script.

The movie now in the pipe is said to be a direct sequel, not a reimagining, and moves the world forward a few decades as young African-American female pilot tries to stop an evil Russian female rocket scientist from stealing the jetpack technology during a pivotal moment in the Cold War.

Now The DisInsider reports that the follow-up is back in development with Boomerang writer Azia Squire penning a new draft of the screenplay. As of now the filmlooks to be  targeting a direct to Disney+ launch as opposed to a theatrical release.

Brigham Taylor (Lady and the Tramp) is also reportedly set to produce alongside Noah Weinstein, NBA champ Blake Griffin and the NFL’s Ryan Kalil. No director has yet signed on to helm even as Dillard put his hand up with a tweet last week saying: “Dear universe, I would like to make a sequel to this movie.”
