The total of this year’s four-day Memorial Day holiday box-office added up to $172.3 million, making it the lowest Memorial Day box office since 1999 when the second weekend ofStar Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace won the holiday weekend with a box haul of $142.5 million.
This past weekend had many disappointing results from newcomers. For the four days, the $230 million-budgeted fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film treasure chest was only $76.6 million with $62 million of that from the Friday through Sunday. That Fri-Sun total is less than half what the first Pirates sequel won with in 2006.
the Dwayne Johnson R-rated comedy Baywatch pulled in just $18.1 million for the three-day weekend and will should finish with around $22 million for the four-day holiday weekend. That is less than half of what the studio’s early estimates had for the the film.
The rock was beaten by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 which is the only big winner of the summer so far. We here at TOT think Wonder Woman and Cars 3 will be big winners this summer too. Vol 2 has estimated $19.89 million box office take for the three-day and is expected to finish around $24 million for the whole holiday weekend.
Alien: Covenant was fourth with a massive 71% drop in its second weekend, only earning $10.5 million for its second weekend.
