VideoLAN has updated its open-source VLC media player to version 3.0 with a significant number of new features.
VLC version 3.0 adds support for Chromecast, which lets people push video from their handset to any device that can receive casted content. Other additions include support for 360-degree video and 3D sound playback, HDMI passthrough, HDR quality video, 10 bit video, a handful of new codes, and much more.
The release notes also mention “experimental AV1 video” decoder support. VideoLAN last year joined the Alliance for Open Media’s effort to develop the AOMedia Video codec, AV1, a successor to VP9 and a royalty-free alternative HEVC.
VLC 3.0 is available for a variety of mobile and desktop platforms, including Android and iOS.
The app is free to download from the Google Play Storeand the iTunes App Store.
