Yahoo has indicated the company is taking steps to further reduce the number of products and services it offers.
Most of the cutbacks announced by Yahoo today affect localized web sites in South America, Europe, Africa, and the Asia-Pacific region. Further, Yahoo is trimming both profile.yahoo.com and alert.yahoo.com for all users in favor of streamlined account management tools and user-based alerts.
As far as mobile products are concerned, Yahoo is closing up shop on Yahoo Classic Games, which includes Yahoo Poker, Yahoo Pool, and Yahoo Bingo. Yahoo believes there are plenty of third-party games available. Last, Yahoo is going to cease supporting Yahoo-customized Mail APIs after February 9, 2015.
This will affect how people access Yahoo Mail from mobile devices. In its place, Yahoo will make IMAP service with OAuth-2.0 available in early 2015. Yahoo believes IMAP with OAuth-2.0 will provide a better mobile email experience moving forward. Yahoo said it will help third-party developers transition from the Mail APIs to IMAP in the weeks ahead.
