2010 saw one of the biggest increases in movie ticket prices of all time. Yet despite the fact that some theaters were charging $50 for IMAX 3D showings, the actual, overall price hike only averages out to around a 39-cent increase.
Average ticket prices rose more than 5% from $7.50 in 2009 to $7.89 in 2010 according to The Wrap. It’s worth noting that last year annual inflation only rose 2.3%. Movie ticket prices outpaced inflation by almost 3%.
3D Means Dig Deeper into Your Wallet
2D showings, which haven’t really increased in price much, while 3D prices have skyrocketed to ridiculous levels. This may even be great in 2011, as theaters convert even more screens to 3D, lowering the number of 2D screenings which have kept that average ticket price within the realm of the reasonable.
